2. The richness of vehicle routing problems

The class of vehicle routing problems will be introduced. The main formulations for a basic routing problem will be presented. An overview of heuristics, metaheuristics and matheuristics will be given, with specific application to routing problems. Recent trends in research on routing problems will also be discussed.

3. PhD thesis: what you should know

Principles about how to do a good paper will be presented. Examples of papers on routing problems will be given.
An overview of the scientific OR community will be provided: scientific associations, journals (traditional, hybrid, open access), conferences, literature databases, impact factor, h-index.  How to make research results visible before publication and why.

Biosketch

M. Grazia Speranza is  full professor  of Operations Research at the University of Brescia, where she served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business and Deputy Rector.  She had responsibilities in scientific societies, as President of EURO (association of European Operational Research Societies)  and President of the TSL (Transportation Science and Logistics) society of INFORMS. She is currently President of IFORS (Federation of the Operational Research Societies).

Her main scientific interests are: mixed integer programming and combinatorial optimization with applications to transportation and supply chain management and to portfolio optimization. She is author of about 200 papers that appeared in international journals and volumes, and edited international volumes.

She has been plenary speaker at several international conferences and member of the scientific committee of the major international conferences in the field. She has been editor of journals such as Transportation Science, EURO Journal on Transportation and Logistics, International Transactions in Operational Research, 4OR. She is editor-in-chief of the series ‘EURO Advanced Tutorials in Operational Research’.
She was awarded with the Laurea honoris causa from the University of Freiburg, Switzerland.
